I love vintage items, from clothing and accessories to furniture. This being so, I like to visit antique fairs occasionally. Besides finding unique and high quality handcrafted items, I love the thrill of the chase, the challenge of finding the perfect object among so many pieces from the past.

Both the Rosebowl Flea Market in Pasadena and the Melrose Trading Post in Los Angeles are well worth a visit. They take place on the second Sunday of the month and every Sunday, respectively. As the two fairs are huge - especially the Rosebowl - here are some tips to ensure a day of successful shopping:

1. Arrive early! Even before opening, when sellers are still taking things out from their trucks! That way, you are more likely to get your hands on the most coveted items.

2. Bring cash to facilitate transactions and save time.

3. Write down all the measurements of the spaces in your home that might deserve a new piece of furniture or object. The worst thing that can happen is falling in love with something but not being sure if it will fit in your home.

4. Try to look beyond the dust and scratches. Most objects can be improved with a splash of paint or a good clean.
